Righting Systems: Polling question...

I'm interested in finding out which system is the most popular among you "Old Salts"?

1. Rope around shroud chainplate.

2. Easy Rite system. (Hobie catalog)

3.Easy Up "Hawaiian" system. (Hobie catalog)

4.Upright Solo system. (Hobie catalog)

5. Any of the righting pole systems out there.

And how many of you use righting buckets?

I weigh 175 lbs. and have a H14t and have been using #1 with no problems but, I guess, I'd like to know if I'm missing out on a better way?

with my 14 I had a line tied around the pylons on both sides that worked good but 175 lbs is not enough, the bucket seems the best for solo sailing.

No, they aren't messing with you. A line tied around the dolphin striker post is the most common, inexpensive, easy to use, reliable, and low maintenance.

Agree with the single line method. Steve, you got your answer.....none of the means you listed are preferred....at least by most of the "Old Salts" who've responded thus far. If what you have works, that's cool...it's very similar, so I don't think you're really "missing out on something." I would caution you, though, that I've seen a ring ding pulled out by a righting line routed near the shroud chainplate. The celevis pin then came out leading to dismasting.

The single line is easy....just hurl it over which ever hull's in the air. I run mine where it can be pulled out from under the tramp.

From my understanding, several of the other righting line configurations on your list don't work any better. When working properly, they just retract by themselves (probably not real important unless you race). Because they're more complicated, they require maintenance and are less reliable. I truly dislike the hollow braid/internal shock cord thing for numerous reasons. From my experience, a pole is no better than a line. Also, those shroud extender things just look like disaster waiting to happen (mast base popping out of cup[).

To further answer your question, I do use a bag when sailing solo. I'm about 180 pounds and need the bag to right solo unless there's a ton of wind.

You say that you have no problem with your current set up....is that righting solo? I'm curious since my daughter just acquired a 14-T and neither of us has had a chance to practice righting.

I'm 160lbs, I never had a problem righting my H14.

Single line attached to the dolphin striker is the simplest and very effective as Matt says.

The single line is a great option for the 14. and that was what your question was about. A hobie 14 is so prone to rolling fore and/or aft during righting, that a balanced pull from a single point is almost mandatory.
BUT if you are sailing with a crew, double trapped, a righting line that runs from at or near the rudder gudgeon around the shroud, and retracted in a vee under the tramp will save you a lot of trips around the mast when you stuff the back of a wave....my crew will pick it up at her feet and use it to prevent herself, and me, from being thrown forward. My crew will also sometimes pull the slack out of the front of the line too, and use it to hold herself in against the boat, and that keeps her from being knocked off her feet by waves that sometimes break along the side of the boat, she in turn breaks the force of the waves hitting my feet, and that keeps me right side up too.
Staying in place will also prevent most of your capsizes, by allowing you to lift the hull back out of the wave and continue on racing..and if you do capsize, and use that righting line, it self-retracts.. Engineer your own, use as light a line as you can stand on your hands, a piece of bungee, and a couple of pulleys under the tramp.
I my opinion the internal shock cord sytem is sloppy and holds a lot of water. Simple and OK for rec sailers I guess.
The 14 racers just right the boat, leave the line in the water, get back in the race, and deal with it when they get around to it, great for that boat.

Same for me but I'm no Old Salt.
