Here is a link to Kyle, age 6, skippering the Hobie 20 from the wire.

Kyle is the man! I mean kid...

There are plenty of adults who don't have the balls or the skills to skipper a 20 under any circumstances let alone when they are six.

I tried and tried to get my son interested in sailing my Hobie but nothing I did worked.

My sons are most interested in sand castles, crab catching at low tide, boogie boarding, soccer, and baseball. Sailing is just something they do with dad so far. The three things that help to make them more excited about sailing are trapeezing, having mom on the boat, and showing off for a friend. Both of my boys also have full wetsuits that they wear sailing on most days. It keeps them warm and keeps them from getting bruised up. We have done some fun racing, but it is always for fun, not for competition yet. They are getting the concepts down, but not having the added pressure of winning or losing.

We also try to mix it up a bit. I have a 20 and a Wave, and two hobie kayaks. We tow the kids behind the 20 on a surfboard, boogie board, and several at a time on an old windsurf board. It's all about making it fun for them.

I try to sail with them in moderate wind, not too much to scare them (easy to do on the 20), and not too little to bore them.

Our next adventure will be New Years day racing on the 20 with three trap wires. I am hoping for about 12 knots to make it fast and fun.
