Sailing vintage Hobie Cats in West Africa.

They're not stickers.

It is a hand-painted hull (marine artist Wyland - http://www.wyland.com) from the 40th Anniversary Regatta. It was auctioned off for charity at the event. Rich recently acquired it from the original purchaser.

Ya gotta envy a guy that has the money to buy that unique piece, a wife that endorses the idea and allows it to be displayed INside the home, and the passion to put it all together.

My next goal is to get a recap of all the signatures. Who they are and what they have done for Hobie Sailing. Then I'm going to have a plaque made up with the date, time, Signatures , and piece name.

If it wasn't named when it was painted I was going to ask Wyland to name it. I'm thinking "Dolphins on Starboard".

I have a few modifications to make for the shelf then it will be finalized.
Yes I have a wonderful wife to allow such an investment and taking up the whole living room.

Any chance Hobie Cat could persuade Wyland to authorize a reproduction of his dolphins as stickers for us mere mortals? Or maybe a limited-series Hobie 16? Although that would obviously have to be done by Hobie Cat Europe, since Hobie in California no longer makes the H16

Hobie in CA still makes 16s.

For a few years they were being made in Australia.How do you know where the boat is made,is there some indication in the serial #?

I think the only way Wyland will reproduce the art is for his charity foundation. Thats where the procedes went for this auction. I checked with Wyland Galleries to find out a replacement value for our insurance. You don't want to add that price to a H-16 (trust me).

Later today if I get my computer working right I will post the final pics. Its a piece of Hobie Way of Life and its only right to share. I also have 2 signitures I'm unclear on I'll post them later.

Btw she has been named now, with the Wyland Galleries blessings.

I was sitting next to the original owner in the front row taunting him that I was going to score the hull and hang it in the shop, which is utterly ridiculous because my shop is as small as a jail cell. Pure man trip! I bid $1000. The original owner had had a few rums by this point, and got this scary glint in his eye, that I've only seen a few times before, and started bidding. He was determined to win it. I kept saying that I was going to bid after all of the 'low ballers' were finished wasting my time. Pure ridiculousness! I had no intention of bidding anymore. He kept bidding, and finally won. He looked over at me with wide-eyes and said something like, "I'm going to put that on my boat and race it, and wreck it!" He mentioned a few names of a several notoriously dangerous racers, and made hand motions of a hull ripping through a mainsail A reference to an accident that had recently happened. Meanwhile, I was rolling on the floor hysterically laughing at the whole thing. Classic!

This is where it get's a little fuzzy, I can't remember if he won the auction first or if it was prior to bidding. I think it was after, but the original owner started grabbing people to sign it. Everyone! And being that the original owner is a lover of all music, and Rex just had sang his famous song up on stage, he signed the hull.
