I just traded my iphone in for an android, and just assumed that there would be a decent gps app available. Unfortunately I haven't found one yet. On the iPhone, I used MotionX, which I loved because, in addition to downloadable maps, it would display my VMG toward any way points I had setup.

Are there any android apps that you guys recommend?

I was told that ..."The iphone and ipad don't have gps. They use cell tower triangulation to derive position. It's a very neat trick. The faux-gps would not work without cell towers nearby.

The blackberry DOES have true gps."

I can't help the original post with the android phone, but I just wanted to clarify that the iPhone does use a true GPS. The iPhone 4 combines the GPS with cell tower triangulation depending on the requirements of the app. If the app needs to know your neighbourhood to give you accurate information, (like perhaps a sale in your area) then the app designer will generally program it to use the cell tower triangulation as this uses less battery life. If you were using a GPS function like a map, then it would use the true GPS. I can't remember the details on the iPad, it's possible that it is different, but the iPhone certainly does use true GPS.

I may have answered my own question in case anyone is interested. I downloaded GPS Essentials last night, and it looks like it is exactly what I'm looking for.

Honorable mention goes to an app called BC Racer.

The iPhone does infact have a TRUE GPS. It uses triangulation, gps satellites and wifi when available to hone in on your most precise location.

I just switched to the EVO myself. i downloaded EarthNC. I think I paid $12 for it but it is GPS over NOAA charts. I really like it so far.

I have been using Android Droid with Navionics.

Purchase is region specific. Data is downloaded and kept on microSD card. I have used it 20 miles off shore.
