Hello, while stepping my mast on my 1979 Hobie 16, the base tore out. Meaning that the base itself came apart where the rivets were attached to the base. The mast itself is fine there does not appear to be any damage. I can cut the rivets out, there were only 2. The issue is, that I went to Murry's site to order a new base. The part has a statement that states:

"This is the Hobie® factory standard replacement black mast base for Hobie 16 since the mid-1980's. Be advised that if you have an older mast step, you will want to also replace the mast base casting, as they were both updated by Hobie Cat in order to allow greater mast rake. Note, too, that in order to accommodate greater mast rake, you will need a longer forestay (or add an additional 10-hole adjuster) and shorter shrouds. Use four #19-5032 6-6 rivets for installation. - See more at: http://www.murrays.com/50-20640011.html ... wVkTR.dpuf"

I am asking if anyone has experience with this? Do I really need to replace the mast base casting and the shrouds, and for-stay!

Thank you in advance.

Bill H.

You can replace just the mast base casting. The other part (on the crossbar) is the "step" casting.

The best performance is with the parts as a matching set, but I'd think not required for the budget conscious.

Thanks Matt for the quick response.

I assumed as much, but that statement from Murry's threw me a bit. Perhaps down the road I do replace all the parts, but for now in the name of getting the season going... :-) Thanks again.
