A storm overnight in Wawa, Ontario (wind gusts of 60km/hr) has flipped my Hobie 18. She was moored in the water, and pulled to shore just after midnight, turned crosswise to the wind and flipped. She has broken the left (now upside hull) jib cleat off, shredded the job. I was able to remove the boom, tiller bar and main sail (rolled and tied to tramp). Because she is crosswise to the wind, I untied the ropes on the tramps and split them to allow the wind to pass between relieving pressure on the mast. This is a gamble, because that has also removed some of the structure between the hulls. The mast is at this time still okay, and the rivets where she attaches to the spreader bars are still good. The boat is resting on the right magnum wing, which I am sure is applying a lot of stress to the hull. I am praying very hard that the winds lessen now, and she will be okay. What I am looking for is ideas on how to right her in the morning. She is on shore, and the water is less that 2" deep where the left hull will drop. What is the best way to right her? Brenda

Start at the top of the mast, lift and start walking towards the trampoline. You might need help, depending on how tall/strong you are.

At some point, the boat will balance on the lower hull and you can step around to the "underside" and catch the hull as it comes down slowly (this is where another person can really be handy).

As long as the mast isn't bent, the boat should be OK.

Sad news that your 'baby' got blown around.

As a precaution, place some old car tires in the area where the 'hull in the air' will land.
Use your righting line to do what Matt said.

My SX18 got blown around last week in a micro-burst, despite two tie downs, one at center and one at the rear.
The front one snapped, and there is only one tiny spot of gelcoat damage. H18's are tough.

Thanks for all the tips. With the aid of four men, she was righted this morning. I will need to replace some hardware:pins on the jib shackle track, jib shackles, and new line to lace the tramps (had purchased it this spring to replace it this fall). I am now in the saving phase to buy new sails, as the jib was shredded. These were original sails, so I knew they would have to be replaced. I just wanted to get some more sailing out of them, before I replaced them.

So all went well, thanks to everyone for their tips. Nice to know that there is help out there. Glad to hear there is another Hobie 18 on the shores of the Big Lake (mine is near - and will be on the Big Lake when I feel more comfortable). If ever in Wawa - let me know.

Well, I think that summer might be here in Wawa. My boat is in the front yard, and I'm waiting for my new sails to arrive :)

I find that I'm looking for a few parts. I've had to replace the sails - went with Peak Sails, new battens as well. Damaged as well were the jib clew blocks, and the starboard jib car. I am wondering if anyone has a pair of jib clew blocks and/or jib car for sale in good condition?

Let me know... I'm looking forward to doing a couple of months of sailing before the ice sets back in :(
