 Post subject: When to replace battens?

Examining the battens, I've found one to be spintering, but not broken, near the luff. Is it time to replace it?

If you've got enough material left, trim the end and put a batten cap on it to eliminate the splitting.

No - seriously! 1 layer around the end will hold it together and keep it from slitting further.
