I am looking for some help from the old salts. Our camp has assembled a fleet of Hobies (a 14, two 16's & my 18). I as the most experienced sailor have been asked to develop a course (or steal one) so that potential skippers have a grasp on the fundamentals of sailing a cat.

Last year I used some of the material from the Hobie site to give a few kids a rudimentary 1 hour crash course before taking them out. It went reasonably well, but was very very basic. The camp board wants to protect their investment, and get a little more in depth with a better course. Does such a course exist? What about a final exam?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave

Have you tried the Hobie University book published by the class association?

If it were me I would get this:

Get from the Hobie Dealer if you can or from Rick. Reading is one think, but SEEING in action will really teach them fast. Teach them boathandling first.

Just my 2 cents from 27 years of sailing and 7 teaching grand daughter.

After 17 years of cat sailing and 12 years of instruction at our club, I found I learnt sooooooo much from the DVD, my mind boggles.

Even though a lot of the DVD deals with 'racing', the basic concepts of a good tack or a good gybe are covered in a low key and solid manner. Start there, and move upward and onward, as the classes grow in experience.
