FX-1 Questions

I'm starting to really like single handing a boat. A couple of guys in the division are talking about getting fx-1's in a couple of years, which is making me think I should get one as well. I never have consistent crew and it drives me a bit nuts.

What is minimum crew weight?
Are the wings legal for racing? Or... Which wings are legal? Hobie offers three types.

I just found it before I came here.

Wings: Hobie supplied, no more than 12' 4" beam is legal (which all the Hobie supplied wings are).

Minimum weight: is 158.73 lbs. Kick ass! Thats about what I weigh with gear on.

Read the rule on weight, Karl - light clothing, gear doesn't count.

Still, you'd probably only be carrying 5 lbs.

If the rumor of the 20 being discontinued is true, I would guess that I'll be on an FX one as well when my daughter no longer rides with me. I can make minimum weight on the FX/One with no problem.

IF the rumors are true, you know the 20 will "linger" for several years like the 18 and 17 in specific areas. "All" the 20's haven't made it to the Divisions where they are strongest yet, have they?

Regardless, what will the future boat/s be? Without many used FX1's available this may be a tough choice as a new boat. Hence, my suggestion that you [Karl & Chris] rich guys buy one now

I don't know this boat, but wings are REAL nice in a blow. You are above the waves, AND added distance really helps hold the boat down. Have you ever sailed a boat with wings. Yea I know they add weight, but have there advantages.

For all you single handler Hobie sailors, do not forget the Hobie 17. Still plenty of good used ones available, for those of us that can not afford a new boat. This fleet is growing, at least in the Northwest.

And, Wings are included.

High and dry. Sorta high, sorta dry. I'd go with the comfort wings. Seems like a good compromise for wieght and functionality. The look like the wings on a skiff. We'll see. As of right now I'm about $3 dollars away from getting a tin cup and standing on a corner asking for change. I'll have to save a couple dollars to get a real nice comfortable cup for my begging.

Besides, if its light air leave the wings on the trailer That's when the weight hurts you the most. The H17 HAS to be raced with the wings, this doesn't.

They MIGHT let you race Portsmouth with out the wings. Might have to take a hit for less weight.

This is where things are getting screwy with this boat. The HCANA rules state a minimum boat weight in line with published one-up sailing configuration of 148kg (Main and Spi) and in 6.11 "Wings as supplied by Hobie Cat Co. are permitted during racing."

No hit Doug, this "optional" equipment is allowed.

Could be the wings may benefit the light crew, then again may be no difference like the 18/18M
