This guy was only 46 years old. An aerial map-quest reveals he was on a lake/pond no more than 1/8 mile wide.

My biggest fear is he was a lurker on this forum, had not contacted anyone in his local area, and in the excitement of a new boat went out by himself.

TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE! Ask your local Hobie Fleet or someone who has a boat BEFORE you go out the first time. Stop at the house where there's one in the side yard and knock on their door!!!

Where are these powerlines that go over the water?? I live on a large lake and I don't think I've ever seen lines that go over the water, except near the river off the lake...

From the location they described I think THIS is the lake they are talking about. Like Big Jib said, it's a tiny lake. More likely to see power lines near and/or over tiny lakes like this.

I think JRagg's link was pointing to the wrong pond. You can see the boat ramp on the north end of the lake and there is an east-west road right by the ramp. I bet the power lines run next to that road.

Sad story.

I saw this on the local news last night and the boat did not appear to have a comp tip.

Take a closer look at the photo in the news article and you'll see at the top of the frame the bottom end of a telephone pole, which is in line with the front cross beam of the boat.

There is a lake nearby my home that has a powerline directly across the boat ramp about 10 feet from the waterline. It only serves a security light, but it still has electricity running through it. This is a sad reminder that you really have to be aware of your surroundings and that includes what is above as well.

Very sad story. But what a horrible place to have a live line, feet away from the boat launch. A reminder that the hobie masts are deceptively tall.
