I needed to share this with you all. I came across this new product a few weeks back in an article on Annapolis Performance Sailing APS web site http://www.apsltd.com It’s a bottle holder molded into a deck port cover called The Bottleport. http://www.bottleport.com/

The Bottleport screws into a (Viking or Ronstan brand) 5" inspection port with the same watertight seal as the original lid. It provides a way to hold a drink container that is totally secure, out of your way and still immediately accessible with one hand. It will also fit over and works great with the Fat Bag, too! Check out the video.http://youtube.com/?v=ctJODgd4YLw

Originally designed for a Laser (we can forgive that  ) this is a fantastic, and elegantly simple design. For anyone who has 5â€

I just have to say, I really like it. Unfortunately I'm an 18 owner... it would be really cool if that adapter came out.

I don't think it's unfortunate that your an 18 owner  I own a 18 too. But, I agree, I'd really like two for my 18. I'm hoping it will be well and interest generated by the Hobie 18 sailors may convince him to make the 6" port adaptor.

Oh, of course I LOVE my 18, I just meant unfortunately these holders don't fit on the 6" ports. :D

The manufacturer needs to come up with something similar, except so you could screw it in basically upside down, will a little roof, some holes, and screen covering those holes to keep bugs out. It'd be a nice way to ventilate hulls.

Bottle thing is cool too.

Karl, check out my page on the Hobie 18 website. Shown is how I vent my hulls. I use extra port covers and PVC.

I like that. You should paint the pvc black. If the air inside the tube is heated a bit more, it might create some more movement.

I was going to hotlink the pictures here, but they're freakin huge.

I'll cast my vote in favor of the product. However, I see its application mainly for racers who spend hours on the water, instead of recreational sailors who can go ashore when the urge arises.

Hello HobieCat Sailors,

I'm the inventor of the Bottleport and had a good exchange a few days ago with John Latimer about the product. I wish I could supply this to you in a 6" version but it requires an entirely new upper design and tool (the tooling is quite expensive). But sales have been great on the 5" version and if there's a way to get this done in the future I will do it.

From using the prototype on my boat for a year before it went into production, I can tell you that it really works well and now has become indispensable. Speaking as a small boat sailor and not as someone who is selling a product, if I didn't have a 5" port on my boat I would put one in for the sole reason of using the Bottleport. Maybe adding a 5" port somewhere convenient is something you might think about?

And by all means if anyone at Hobie wants to talk about some kind of arrangement I'm open to it...

Thanks for your interest,

Greg Little
