I now know, it's the D ring. It's the D ring that when you unscrew it, the pin falls off into the water or in the high grass and you can't find it. Why do you need the pin to come all the way out? :x Are we trying to save grams? Why? Why? Why? This is my only sailing pet peeve that I'm going to soon fix. Is it really so we can cuss?

I have a couple of shackles that the pin does not come all the way out. I will look and see if I can find any markings on them.

They're called captive pin shackles. Anything that I operate on a semi regular basis has a captive pin. I would have lost every pin by now otherwise.
