Holiday weekend questions

This will be my second holiday on the water. Memorial day in the inter-coastal was like the harbor scene from Jaws. Once I got into the Gulf we were OK and we got off the water by 5:00. What is everybody's advice on holiday weekends. I'd love to watch the fireworks on the bay but I've heard that the 4th on the water is like New Years Eve on the roads. I'll probably be sailing Sarasota bay on Saturday and/or Sunday and try to get off the water early. Advise would be appreciated.

Also where is everybody else sailing this weekend?

I don't get on the water during the July 4th holiday unless it's so windy that it blows everyone else off of the lake.

Holiday weekends are amateur hour for boaters. Memorial Day and Labor day are usually the worst in Texas - 1st and last sessions of the season for many of the weekend warriors.

ya think maybe having the Mid-Americas over the fourth of July, close to a MAJOR metropolitan area, was a bad idea?

holiday = rookie day on the water. all the idiots that go out a few times a year are out . And probably drunk. i avoid this like the plague. holidays are meant for tuning the boat in the drive way. Tighten the tramp fill a gelcoat nick wash and wax it, go out the weekend after when the idiots are back at home or in the hospital.

But to answer your question, yes... Though in years past, the area has a history of blowing like stink over the July 4th holiday. Even I have been chased off the lake by high winds a couple of times in years past.... That's saying something.

"No" on the control issue...just wanted your opinion. Figured you may have some insite to the mindset.

We're going out to dodge the power boats and pwc's at the home lake this weekend. Fortunately, we've got a decent wind forecast here as well.

Being a "lowly windsurfer", I don't have that much to do with the fleet other than being their pusher... err, dealer.

Part of the mindset probably comes from having to find a time when the yacht club is available to host an event. DCYC hosts a lot of racing. All the clubs around here do. It's tough to find an open weekend sometimes.




We'll try... Looks like we're stuck with crappy-5 out of the south.

Right now we are in the middle of an thunderstorm in the Northwest. All sailboats off the water, waiting for it to clear. Hopefully by later today and tomorrow, will be back to normal.

I had a pleasant 4th of July on the water. Of course it was cold and pouring rain, so the power boats did not come out to play. yes!

The wind speed didn't make it over 6mph, but thats all good. I got to practice some light air tacks.

Of course I need to find a way to string the new sails up in the house so they'll dry out.
