Rigging boom to boat Pictures on how to do it?

I am a complete newbie to sailing. I just bought a hobie 16. I believe it is an 82. It is in really good shape with a new mast and sails. I was looking on this forum to see if you guys could help me with photos of how to rig the boom to the back of the boat with the pulley set up. I downloaded the H16 owners manual from this site but it is in black and white I can't see how it is done. I am truly excited about sailing but I figured I should talk to some experienced sailors first. I apologize that I am not familiar with the sailing components and their names but hopefully in time I will be a lot better. If there is anything you all think I should know feel free to let me know.

Welcome to the forum and sailing Aaron. While I do not have photos, I would encourage you to read the FAQs. There is a wealth of info. Also do some searches and you will soon learn a lot. I did and have about one year of sailing under my belt. Still learn a lot by reading this forum. I would also recommend a book which I believe is entitled "Sailing for the 90s". Maybe others can give you a more specific title. At any rate, a must read for newbies. Just keep an eye out and you will learn a lot from the experienced ones that frequent this forum.

starting from the car mounted pully, the rope goes from the boat to the rear boom mount, around the pully, back to the boat, then returns to the more forward (closer to mast) mount point, then heads back to the boat, wraps back around and ties to the forward pully on the boom. obviously this means that the pully with multiple wheels mounts off the car on the boat, and the pully that has a place to tie a rope to beneath the pully itself mounts forward on the boom and the remaining pully mounts on the back of the boom

the other end of the rope should be used to control the car.

Hey speed633, close, but not exactly right between the blocks. I'll see if I can dig up the picture I found a while back for the 5:1. It works better than what you have posted.

It's actually on page 25 of the H16 assembly manual .pdf file. They left the old picture there.

Either way will work. JRagg's method allows you to sheet in a little closer.

The block with the becket (where the end of the sheet is tied) goes on the aft bail (hanger). The single block goes on the forward bail.

Starting at the becket, go foward through the starboard side of the lower double block, up to the single block (turned 90 degrees to the centerline of the boat) down to the port side of the double block going aft, up to the single / becket block on the boom, then down through the ratchet and looped around to the traveller like in the diagram.

Clear as mud?

I got to work and got distracted by... work. Such a travesty.

Here's the picture I was talking about. You can't see the traveler, so use speed633's diagram for that. Matt's explanation is right on. You get a little more space if you've got the block with the becket in the aft spot. If you've got old stretched sails like me, every little bit helps.

The key in the second system is to let the foward block turn perpindicular to the centerline of the boat.

There's a small set screw in the base of the block that you can loosen to let the block swivel, or tighten to fix at a certain angle.

Thanks but I have the traveler car system with six pulleys. Those are good pics though.
