Tried getting the bridge tender guy to open the bridge using the horn/whistle method, but was ignored. Finally, called information on cell phone, got Coast Guard Station, who gave me bridge tenders phone number, which I called. He agreed to open bridge. How do most of you guys get the bridge guy to open up the bridge?

I use my radio to call the operator of a drawbridge. They have told me that I must be under motor power to navigate through a drawbridge, but he open it still.Try to tag behind a bigger boat next time...I remember sailing around Sanibel Island one night and having problems get the operator to open the bridge for me...Bill 404 21 SE

Have you tried asking the bridge operator how to contact him?

I'm sure the normal way is VHF, but I think I'm going with cell phone, since it is equipment I take already. I just have to get phone numbers of appropriate bridges before I go out. I guess if I start doing more offshore stuff it might be a good idea to invest in a VHF.

When I was sailing on the intercoastal around Sarasota we always radio'd for bridges to lift... some are on time intervals, some will open at will for sailboats. Never had an operator comment about being under motor power though.
