Guys I will be on holidays in Narooma for the week beginning the 7th February and am taking my red 2009 AI with me and will be sailing/kayaking it there.
If there is anyone with an AI or TI who wants to join me I would welcome them. Also I have ordered a new AI and anyone in my area of Gippsland or around Narooma over that period who wants to try it out with a view to buying it, is most welcome to do so. It is in spiffy condition and I am only upgrading because I can afford to....Pirate

Hi Pirate,

Just wondering how you rate the 2011 A.I. compared to your ex-2009 one?

I've heard rumblings about issues with the durability of the new AKAS system...

Any plus or minus points may help me decide if I should go for a new one (aside from issues of affordability!) or hold out for a nice used model.

Frankly I don't think there is much in it Mingle. The 2009 AI was great and still is. The smaller rudder presented no problem for me but did for others. I had no problems with rudder pins breaking but I shimmed mine but the new transom design is a stronger job. The new aka connection method is fast and easy, and I don't see any real problems with them. A little WD40 on the stainless rivots after sailing is a good thing just to keep corrosion away. Maybe they will wear a little on the knuckles but I doubt it. The older system is a little clumsy to connect but worked well. The new tiller handle is a winner but everything else is pretty well the same. New one comes with warranty so I would go that way. Good luck with it...Pirate :wink:
