I am interested in purchasing a hobie 16 the guy said its a mid 80's boat and I was just wondering about what the numbers on the sail would be for a mid 80's boat so I can tell if there the originals? Also what were the colors for the 80s of the tramp hulls and sails?

You can find the year of the boat by the serial number on the stern of both hulls.

It's not complete, but here are some sail patterns by year:
http://www.cat44.com/hobie-16-sail-color-history.htm

It might help you determine if the sails are the same year as the hulls.

Here is the complete (at least until 2006) sail color history:

I bought my boat new in 1985 and chose an alternate sail color called "Rumrunner". Sail number was 86430. It is not in the list you linked to. It was shown in the original brochure when I bought the boat. I don't know if I can find the brochure but will look.

I'd be interested in seeing that - that sail color chart took about 2 months to research, and I've got Hobie brochures going back to the early '70s, but I don't think I've got the '85 one.

I started looking for that '85 brochure but so far only found one from '83. The Rumrunner sail was similar to the Carumba but not quite the same. I will look further. A couple of years ago, I found a set of slightly used sails and bought them. I then sold the Rumrunner sails to someone else. I will look for any old pictures I have of them.

I just compare my '83 brochure to the link you supplied. The brochure lists "Hot Flash", "Lt. Blue/Dk. Blue Panel", "Jalapeno", "Tequila Sunrise", "Blue Hawaii", "Carumba", "Boomer", "Smokin' ", and "Cat Fever". Only 2 of these are on the list on your link. Those are "Blue Hawaii" and "Hot Flash". Your link has other sails for '83 that are not in my brochure. It's all pretty confusing.

The sails are listed in the year they first appeared, not every year they were offered. Many designs (Tequilla Sunrise, Cat Fever and Carumba, for example) were offered for many, many years.
