Dual Trap setup?

I am new to the forums, I purchased, and was given 3 different very old Hobie 16's and have now finished creating my "franken16" using the best parts from all 3, I have lots of leftover parts and will be donating most of the stuff to good folks on the boards.

Here is my question, I noticed in several threads where Matt Miller makes note of the old "Dual Trap" system, all of the boats that I have had it. I purchased a couple of harnesses from a dealer in Seattle, but it turns out that I didn't get enough stuff. (ie dogbones etc.)

Since I have the old style dual system, does anyone have a picture of the setup? I am located very remotely here in Montana and there is no dealer locally, so I am on my own.

ONLY to clarify: By "dual" you mean two trap lines on each side?

I'm not sure what specific question you have about the "set up." Do you mean at the mast tang? The shock cord configuration? Do you mean dual adjustable trap rig?

Give us a little more detail and you're sure to get your answers.

Yes to all three questions. the wires have a shackle at the top (obviously to connect to the Mast tang.



I built my own dogs this morning with my plasma cutter and some spare steel but I guess the I will need to buy four of these rope lock gismos shown in the manual on page 3 item 61530000 since I can't actually see from the drawing what they look like.

My big question is at the top of Mast tang, the dual wires have a small length of wire the goes to another thimble but the thimbles are inverted so it is confusing me. Thanks for the help.

It's from the H16 assembly manual (which I can also email you). In it you can clearly see the right way to attach the trap lines to the mast tang. With a total of two trap lines, one on each side for soloing, they attach to the upper two holes by way of a dedicated shackle that fits through both (bolt is on top).

If you have a total of four trap lines, for skipper and crew on each side, you add the additional wires to the lower, larger, main shackle that also holds the two shrouds and forestay. Yes, if adding the third and forth trap lines to the lower shackle they are placed on the outside of the shrouds with the forestay in the center.

As for the shock cords, you need one for each pair of trap lines. They connect to the bottom of the trap line on one side, then run under the tramp frame and up to the bottom of the other trap line. It connects either with plastic hooks available at your local dealer, or you can simply tie them directly. The hooks allow you to remove the shock cord for transport/storage.

I modified my boat quite a bit to accommodate the whole system and can post or send you pics if desired. Other than that I recommend studying the assembly manual and the catalog which will give you a lot of the visuals on how the system comes together and how it can be modified.

That is incorrect.

All the trap wires go on the upper shackle. Crew's go on the inside (closest to center); skipper's go on the outside.

Not sure where I got that idea exactly, maybe it didn't look like my upper shackle had room? In fact, it still doesn't look like it but I'll switch mine today regardless.

Thanks for the reply, the problem is my tangs (all three from all three old boats) are so old the only have 1 hole in them and from reading Matts responses to other folks this was the solution that the factory came up with, build a tang with two holes, I am making the assumption that mine looks this way as a pre dual cat tang, and it has an upside down thimble. The dual wires have a small length of wire the goes to another thimble but the thimbles are inverted so it is confusing me. I appreciate the help and the photo was great, now if I can only find somebody with boats as old as mine. All 3 mast tangs are the same 1 hole. All 3 dual cat rigs have the second thimble and all are upside down, so I think that it must have come from the factory this way. Maybe I can have my wife take a picture so that I can post it for you.

My wires are like that too. There is a timble about 6 inch from the end and another one at the end. I use the timble 6 inch from the end, because if I use the one at the end, it would open up the nicropress fitting.

I was meaning to cut off that piece, but did not have my dremel with me when I stepped the mast, so I left it there for now. Next time I drop the mast, I might cut it off.

Don't cut it: I think that's your forestay wire, not your trap line.

Can't be my forestay, last season those trap wires were in a bag in my travel trailer while I was sailing my boat. The wires also have a trap handle built-in, which also confirms they are not a forestay wire.

I was thinking the same until I rigged it. If I used the loop at the end, it would end up underneath the tramp.

It almost looks like the double loops should be at the bottom since ther is a slug to stop the trap handle on that end, but I find it too high. So I put the double loops up.

I'm not too worried about it as I am replacing them anyway. They look old and I want to stay with the boat.
