Main Traveler Bumpers Harry?

installed those Main Traveller Bumpers you sent me samples of several years ago

please tell me more about these bumpers Harry, have any pix to show?
it's a good idea, keeps the traveler from hanging up at the end? (besides bumping)

I have been thinking of pieces of black fuel hose about 3" or so long in the traveler track ends as stops. I would leave the car on the boat all the time then. Any feedback positive or otherwise?

Hi Guys,

A couple of years ago (if I remember correctly) we were discussing here on the forum the main traveller ... ( I think Mr Stephen Cooley and Mr Dale Van Lopik were involved ) .... and they mentioned "Bumpers" for the H18 Main Traveller ..... I had never heard of such a thing. A couple weeks later I got a envelope in the mail w/ "bumpers" from Dale . They are round neopreme? .... maybe 3/4" thick by 3/4" dia .... and you stick them in the ends of the "Main Traveller" track on the corner castings. They provide a small amount of cushioning when/if the main traveller car is allowed to hit the end of the traveller track.

Now I recieved this nice surprise in the middle of the winter ... so .... the envelope was placed out on my workbench .... then in my "trailer-box" ... and mixed in w/ all my other spare parts ... (some in envelopes too ...) .... I'ld re-discover it every few months and promise to install them to myself .... and promptly procrastinate some more ......

Or you can just tie a stopper knot in the traveler line.

I always travel all the way in during a jibe. Then travel out immediately after. I guess during a race it might be faster to just let it slam over, I do use my arm to cushion the blow.

Can you provide a picture of your items installed?

Never let your main traveller "slam" over in a jybe .... never, never, never !!!

Do what MR SRM mentioned/suggested ... I always have a "stopper" knot in my traveller line ... the bumpers are for if something breaks or goes wrong and are extra protection ....

Now when I jybe it is usually a two stage jybe w/ a VERY (if any) slight hesitation when I'm at straight downwind .... this is the point were I'm at the rear crossbar ... usually centered on the boat facing aft ... Hotstick thrown aft w/ one hand holding the tiller crossbar steering .... as the boom/mainsheet stack comes across, I grab the sheetlines while switching hands on the tiller crossbar (to maintain a smooth carving turn ...) and control the boom w/ the sheetlines ... usually slowing it down, then releasing the sheetlines when the the boom is about 18"-2' off of centerline .....

Does that make sense??? Try/practice some slow jybes ... then pick-up the tempo/speed ... you'll get the feel for it quickly.

Remember ... you can "slam/roll" tack a H18 .... but you need to "CARVE" a Jybe .... it maintains your boatspeed best !!!!

The material was 3/4" diameter and can be cut to length. It was purchased from McMasterCarr and was around a 60 to 90 softness duraometer. I would have to find the reciept. Easy to make and keeps the car and the nice "balls" Stephen Cooley makes from getting damaged.

Harry, Your comments are 99% on the mark every time, you know your 18 stuff.

Stephen, keep the 18s alive enough so when my girls get out of college and I have some extra money I can get to a Hobie 18 Nationals. Thanks for all you do.

I'm getting old, I love my wings..... best boat Hobie ever made.

Unlike Harry ..... the ungrateful sot (Grin)

Upon receiving your ball bumpers, I rushed out straight away, and installed them inside the traveler track on my H-18.

They have been there every since protecting and cushioning my balls. (Traveler Balls that is)

Saves the trouble of tying a knot in my mainsheet, which I never really liked doing in the first place.

I liked the idea of using a short length of fuel hose, 3/8 would probably work well.

We are all doing our best to keep the H-18 Fleet alive and well.
