Apologies if this has been covered in another thread, but I didn't see it despite searching the forums.

I live in Central Florida and my kayaking is generally limited to rivers and creeks. So that generally means calm waters with at most a light to moderate current. I primarily use my Hobie Revolution. I like to take photos and video with my digital camera, so I am fortunate to have pedal power and good waters most of the time. I don't use my best camera for kayaking, but I don't use a cheapie either (I have a Canon Powershot SX120 IS, but just upgraded today to a SX150 IS). For now I am using a Lowepro camera bag with a convenient velcro flap and put the strap around my neck which makes getting to the camera fast and easy. Although I have been lucky and not flipped my kayak with my camera I want to be prepared for when I do. I am looking for a quick access camera bag (or case) that is at least temporarily water resistant when closed. Photo opportunities don't always allow enough time to get a camera out of a conventional dry bag and still get the shot. Here in Florida I love to get pictures of alligators, but they generally get in the water and dive out of sight when they hear or see you. Even using my current setup I miss many photo ops. I don't want to try to take pictures or video through a see-through plastic bag.
Does anyone know of a camera bag (or case) that can be opened very quickly, but when closed it is somewhat waterproof?

Here are some GPS tracks and pics of my last outing:

I use a pelican case. I have a small one for my point and shoot and another larger one for my digital SLR. I thinl a case is better than a bag (I actually have both) because a case is two quick latches and it's open or closed... a bag takes longer.

Another option is there are a few waterproof point and shoots out now with pretty good results...

Cheers, and don't feed the 'gators... with yourself!

No answers regarding the camera Titan, but where do you live? I live just south of Jax and spend a lot of time kayaking (and sailing) the St Johns and tributaries as far south as the Ocala National Forest. I'd love to trade some routes.

NAHCA555 - Thanks for the reply. I use a Pelican case for my land-based video equipment and couldn't be happier. I am not sure I can use one in this application only because I would have to find a way to keep it stationary so that it is always in the same place (want to eventually get into a rhythm of getting to it and opening it very quickly).

Mark N - I live in the Cocoa area near the cape. The furthest north I have kayaked is the Tomoka River near Daytona with the southernmost trip being Goat Creek in Valkaria. Several places in between. You can probably find some good routes on Wikiloc which a friend introduced me to. I have lots of GPS tracks that I can email you of past trips, but only have 1 on Wikiloc (I just uploaded my first trip to it yesterday). See my edited initial post in this thread.

A gallon ziplock bag? I have bought waterproof cases for everything it seems. And I always go back to using ziplock bags for my phone (in an otter case), my smokes and lighter (sorry probably not PC but they gotta stay dry), my spare batteries for gopros and sd cards, wallet and keys...they are now all in various sizes of ziplock bags. If you have room on deck, then if you keep the ziplock full of air, they will also float if you tip. I usually squeeze the air out and have it stuffed into a pocket.

kardinal_84 - Thanks for the info. A ziplock will not work for me though due to the time it takes to open it. Even with my current setup where I simply open a velcro flap and grab my camera I can still miss photo opportunities. I cannot imagine how long it would take me to get a ziplock open and a camera out of it. Speed is what I am looking for.

NAHCA555 - Upon further review I am going to give Pelican a try. I did not realize that they made small cases. I am going to give their 1050 a try. I also ordered an Otter case.

Faster than a ziplock bag? I don't think it's going to be anything with latches unless it is secured on deck between your legs or something. But looking at our post, it looks like you have considered that.

My main frustrations with the low to mid end digital cameras isn't quick access, it's the dang slow shutter reaction time. I have the Olympus Super tough 8010 waterproof camera but I could have the camera in my hands, your in a case, and I bet you could still get a picture off faster than I could. Love the camera but hate the slow shutter.

Not sure what level of pics you are trying to take but if you just absolutely need that shot, then you might want to think harder about figuring out a way to NOT flip your kayak. Maybe an outrigger or amas system.

In the long run, I think your chances of waterlogging your camera is much higher with a case that is "Temporarily waterproof" or even a completely waterproof case that you are scrambling to unlatch in the heat of the moment then to just have the camera around your neck with a more stable kayak system. I guess it depends on the reaction time required.

We put people on the moon and rovers on mars. You'd think they could come up with something that doesn't cost more than the camera itself that works.

Good luck and let us know how it works out. I'd love to take my nice Canon 60D DSLR out but NO WAY! The waterproof housing for those babies are more expensive than the camera it seems and my kayaking skills not good enough!

Looks like the Pelican 1050 micro case came through. Exactly what I needed. Quick access and water protection. I can even get the camera in and out of it with one hand if need be (one big latch instead of two smaller latches). I put a camera case strap on it with those split key rings and wear it over my neck just as I would if it was a camera case.
