After 3 years of sailing my TI, I finally came up with a suitable name for this amazing craft.

Betelgeuse (the Hobie TI not to be confused with BeetleJuice the movie ghost).

Known scientific facts.

“A semi regular variable red super star that can outshine others.”
Probably due to its versatility to perform under sail, pedal or paddle.

“It is classified as a pulsating red supergiant with periods of stableness.”
The stableness occurs in the garage, in water it surely pulsates.

“Only about 13% of its energy is visible to human eyes.”
Much of its time is spent in the garage or out of sight over the horizon.

“Betelgeuse is a very large and cool star classified as a red supergiant of M2Iab class.”
That speaks for itself.

“It could easily be over 400 light years from you at a given time.”
It is just so dam fast under sail and pedal.

“Betelgeuse is surrounded by a circumstellar envelope composed of matter ejected from the star.”
This occurred when I capsized and the wife and I were ejected.

“Multiple-aperture interferometers are now used to capture speckled images, which are synthesized using Fourier analysis to produce a portrait of high resolution. It was this methodology that identified the hotspots on Betelgeuse.”
The hotspots would include carbon mast, furling main, mirage drive, akas and amas.

“Betelgeuse is travelling supersonically through the interstellar medium at a speed of 30 km per second creating a bow shock.”
It certainly feels fast sitting so close to the water and being covered in spray.

“The most likely END scenario is that the supergiant will continue to burn (through the water?) and fuse elements until its core is iron, at which point Betelgeuse will explode as a type II supernova in possibly 100,000 years.”
Until then we will continue to enjoy this magic versatile red supergiant called Betelgeuse.

Cool. Now someone should name a star after "Hobie". :D

You won't be able to carry that name over to the 2015 AI. The new pug nose wouldn't suit the lettering.

I love the name "Betelgeuse"!

I named my AI "Heart of Gold" after a space ship in the book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams.
S.S. Heart of Gold use the revolutionary "Infinite Improbability Drive", the ship is described as a sleek white running shoe.
The core of the Improbability Drive is actually the "Golden Bail of Prosperity".

I come from a background of featherweight skin on frame sea kayaks so I call my yellow AI Moby Duck :D
(I thought it was original but have since seen it posted earlier)

You should change your screen name to Ford Prefect. Of course we'd still sass that hoopy dude ChangeMan, cause he's one frood who really knows where his towel is. Only his name would be different.

Cool name !
It's a good thing that you have the T.I, as a name that long, if using large font when applied to the side of the craft, could end up almost being wrapped around the stern and up the other side.

I know the answer is 42 Thomas, just can't work out the question.
I'll try and work it out before the core of my TI turns to iron.

Funny thing... I had no idea what Betelgeuse was until your post and then last night was looking for the Crab Nebula using the relative position of Orion's stars and then... there it is! Betelgeuse on my star chart! I had to take a second look at the name to be sure.

BTW the Blood Moon was awesome from Southern California last night.

I went out to the middle of a lake on my Outback at 4:30AM to watch the eclipse! Ah, I do love being on the water in the dark. We missed the last half due to clouds to the west but the sunrise was pretty.

Hey Joe, our eclipse was at 9:00 pm so no excuse to be out early like you.
Night sails on a warm balmy night are super though.
Must do more before Betelgeuse core turns to iron :D

I have an 8" reflective telescope. Shot that with my cell phone through the eye piece. :) Wish they came out as clear as it looks in the scope! Last night we had act II ! Moonrise was amazing. Huge... Deep red and then passed through some layers of clouds that made it look like a bandit! Spooky!!
