Finally got my hands on a 21SE! Bought her back in May and have been working tirelessly to get her ready for the water; she's number 119 (1989). All new lines, new rigging, new Whirlwind mylar main and dacron jib, rebuilt rudders, rebuilt wing mounts, replaced the shroud anchor pins with lifting eyebolts, lots of fiberglass repairs, the list goes on and on. Cant wait to keep working on her and enjoy her as much as I did this past weekend! I'll post pictures soon! Anyone with a 21 in the New England area want to get together and sail sometime?

Absolutely love this boat! Lots of ideas and projects on the docket for her.

Welcome to the 21SE group! :D

Get your boat together and help plan a get-together of other 21's on the east coast. Take the long view and think next season...maybe the Outer Banks?

Will get pictures up soon! Took the BEAST out to Cape Cod for its debut and WOWWWW!! I've been sailing 16s for years and read all there was about how much more powerful the 21 SE was, but nothing could have prepared me. Sheeted in my new Mylar square-top Whirlwind main and TOOK OFF! This boat has a permanent home.

Still working through some adjustments and repairs, but she will be in perfect shape come next spring. Main things I'm working on are:

-Wing tubes: all repairs I've made thus far need to be finalized. I'm thinking I might make new ones out of aluminum tubing or change the setup all together and have the wings mount off of the cross bars (much stronger structure and less maintenance).

-Rudders: need to be reshaped and faired (would love to replace with EPO's, but $$$$), assembly needs to be tuned and tightened.

-Paint: would like to regelcoat the hulls (need some advise here) white and paint spars black.

-Trailer: needs paint, updated lights, locker/sail storage, and assembly to assist with raising mast (Bill would love to see your trailer as I've heard it's impressive)

-Spinnaker: would love a spin pole and sail (anyone know of any?)

Any input you guys may have would be greatly appreciated. I looks forward to working on this boat all winter and getting her in showcase condition. We should plan a trip for next summer!

For what it's worth:

I re-skinned part of my rudders to repair a crack. I have built-up and faired both rudders and I've been happy so far.

I too have considered doing a full gel-coat job. For now I have just used gel to repair scratches and dings. You would add a lot of weight and/or spend a ton of time to sand the existing coat. It's messy work, but I'd rather do that than paint.

I added a vertical post to the front of my trailer and a $100 electric winch with wireless remote. I can raise and lower the mast solo.

I built a spinnaker pole from 1 3/4 aluminum tubing ($30) It is 12' long and works well with the existing chute. I am keeping an eye open for a used windsurfing mast as I would like to prebend with tension. As long as there is 8mph wind or so, I can outrun the hobie tiger. Chip at whirlwind can make the original sail. I am considering a more flat modern design, but as long as I can stay ahead of the tigers, I'll prolly save my money.

Todd, please share some photos of your spinnaker pole setup as I am ready to finally build one. Thanks!

21se is an awesome ride. I did the gelcoat job on mine three years ago. Lots of work but she looked new after that.
I put together spin pole this year. Wow with the big spin it cruises!
I will post some pictures of spin and pole. Going to bring boat back from lake his weekend. last sail for year.

Going to start tearing mine down for the season too. Any suggestions on winter storage? I'm hoping to find an indoor home and know keeping the wing mount holes clear is key (rebuilding those once is more than enough).

Also there is a 21 SE available in my area if anyone is interested. It's number 444 and they're looking for $5000 right now.

I typically take hulls apart turn upside down and cover for winter. First year I left together and covered but got tired of shoveling snow off it all winter.

Where are you located? I'm starting my search for a 21 SE, but I'm in S. Texas.
