possible to lengthen a batten?

So I bought a 14 with dead hulls as a spares boat. The sail is a 6 panel sail and newer and in better condition than my existing 5 panel. The previous owner hadn't any battens and had made some out of what looks like aluminum or stainless steel (well I guess they worked but heeeavy). I have two sets of battens for the old 5 panel sail and want to use them figuring I could use one of my extra battens to make up the 6 battens. Thing is the longest bottom battens are too short by a few inches so that the batten end cap is inside the batten pocket. I guess the 6 panel sail is cut slightly differently. I'm thinking of some way to add a few inches to the luff end of the bottom batten to get it to fit. I live in Japan and getting a new batten isn't really practical unless I come across some on the used market but that could take a while. Any suggestions on how I could achieve this? First thoughts are McGuyver an extension and splint it together somehow.

Find someone who has a batten from a H16 and cut it down, or buy one new batten.

I've had that problem when doing some house framing, when someone (never me! ) cuts a 2x4 too short. I just get the stud stretcher out of the truck.

I had a go at making an extension to my short batten. Worked out great. I had some help from Joe at JoyriderTV in his latest Q&A. Should keep me sailing till I can source a new/old batten that is long enough.

"For lengthening the batten :

If you already drill, I would drill holes for 1-3 wooden dowels, cut them flush, and then use the tape to keep everything in position. But in this manner the tape does not have to take the shear forces, that are done by the dowel. And the overlap should be at the BACK end, there a flat spot is not critical, in the forward 1/3 of the sail is really not good."
