I sometimes get weeds wrapped around the flippers. I lift them out to clean them. I made this tether in case I drop it.

Has anyone done this in a better/neater/safer way?

A modified buntline hitch on the Drive, a double cat's claw on an s-biner (should really get a closed one), and I used some coated stainless wire, a D-ring and a couple of crimp sleeves to provide an easy place to hitch it.

I tuck the excess line under the nearby elastic to hopefully keep it out of the drive mechanism. A little worried about that. The line is just long enough to remove the drive while connected.

The metal hitch and carabiner are both small/short enough that they cannot reach under the pedal's point of contact with the board.

That looks pretty good. I think they skipped the lanyard because of the pedals flat against the board at the end of their stroke. Too many pinch points or chances of binding. I make sure I'm in shallow water if I have to remove the drive. Weeds are a hassle. Mine is the 12 foot yellow version.
