If you're not aware of the circumstances of the race (I wasn't) I think you'll find it a remarkable tale.

Interestingly, a documentary was screened here last week about the tragic death of Andrew McCauley the Aussie solo kayaker who died trying to paddle to New Zealand in his sea kayak. I thought there were some interesting parallels in both stories.

How did he die? You have to have a death wish to paddle a traditional style kayak on the open ocean. Two girls went out from Conneticut into the Sound in "Recreational" style kayaks and did not come back.

I am far from knowledgeable about these things, but I think the traditional kayak is generally regarded as having evolved from the open ocean fishing technique which was used by those who used to be known as Eskimos, but these days prefer the name Innuits (I live in the UK - doh! I hope I am not being insensitive)

I have the impression that the original idea was to literally stitch yourself into a kayak made of whaleskin (or something similar) stretched over a boat-shaped frame of some sort, and then go hunting for much longer than appears sensible considering the limits of bowel and bladder control...

I have never discovered how those guys stored their gear, or their food, or their catch, and carried it around on deck- maybe I have completely the wrong end of the stick, and am thinking through the back of my head, but since this question has come to the surface, any informed responses would explain something which has intermittently puzzled me for many many years!

Dear Ditch -I meant taking a traditional kayak( the kind you roll) out on the open ocean is extremely risky because it is very top heavy. In warmer waters there is also the risk of shark attacks etc. Traditional and recreational boats can also fill up with water. I`ve been out in hurricanes with small craft warnings etc. with no problem. Sit -on -tops are best. I think the Eskimos may have had at least one ama? :) Good luck with your A.I.-
