Hi Aledal,
I saw Master and Commander a couple of years ago and loved it. I think Russel Crowe's a brilliant actor and I thought the movie was excellent.
There was just something about 'To the ends of the earth' that really stuck with me, the attritional nature of shipboard life, the seasickness, the weeks of being thrown around by the ocean, the crushing boredom that almost drives them all mad...aspects of life at sea that I had never even thought about...I mean the cabins...Oh My GOD!!..The MONTHS it took to travel distances it just takes us just HOURS cover these days.
It was a television drama made to a budget, its never going to come close to M&C in terms of realistic footage of a wooden sailing vessel going thru the water, but to me it certainly was an education....and will remain for me for a long time.....Pure Golding, of course!
Anyway I'm delighted you enjoyed the movie (if enjoyed is the right word!)

Hey Phil remember me? To the "Ends of the Earth" made me want to throw myself overboard. Very realistic and claustophobic. Great acting. Sam Neill.etc. Thanks for recommending it.Great period piece and plot...
But what about views of the boat going thru the water?
"Master and Commander" remains the one and only true "big wooden ship" sailing movie.
Australians let their hatred for R.Crowe taint their subjectivity.
