Dune is possibly the colour of choice though as it will reflect more light so reducing colour fade and possible UV damage. Has anyone suffered any UV damage to an Adventure Island?.....Pirate

Waiting for my new 2010 to come in next friday. Told that there is NO price change from 2009 @ $US 3395 or thereabouts (red or yellow) :D Very happy to have just sold my 2007 for $1600. Despite no hull change, here's to updated accessories maybe improving pointing by 5 degrees and decreasing heading up tendency!

My 2007 was yellow, but I told them I didn't care, red or yellow. My wife asked the same question and when I told her, she said "It better be yellow". Go figure. (Her [regular] kayak is yellow and she wanted mine to match).

PS In case there is a question, I was told that the trolling motor which will fit onto the mirage opening does NOT come standard.

Hi drkanter,

congrats on the new AI. Has it arrived yet. Are you to confirm what accessories have been upgraded over the 09 model.

Cheers
Grant

Geoffrey,
My wife got the yellow one and I got a red one so lets go use that new boat of yours. I need some competition so you can practice your pointing;).

Absolutely!

For other folks, in case there has been no post on the new 2010 changes, there are some really cool mostly minor changes which are really nice for convenience sake. I sold my 2007 AI which was kept updated but some of these changes I mention below may have actually occurred on later versions which I might not have been aware of.

The only major change (as all of you know I am sure) is a really neat quick auto-lock mechanism to clip and hold the pedal mechanism. Much easier to flip the pedals in an out in 2 seconds rather than wiggling the pedals to get them to seat exactly right and then screw down each side (a pain in big wind and high waves).

There are 2 clips on the top of one aka to neatly hold your paddle above the aka (I recall my first week with my 2007 AI with my paddle bungeed tightly below the aka when a wave smashed it and broke it in half).

The pedals now have mini cushions (anyone else lose blood flow to balls of their bare feet?) Maybe this will help.

The pedals now have a mini-bungee to keep the pedals right side up when not in use so that they are positioned perfectly to put your foot right into instaed of having to flip them upright as they hang upside down due to gravity.

The small mesh netting internal bungee has been improved and strengthened greatly so that you hopefully won't lose the elasticity in 6 months.

There is now an extra brass fitted drain hole plug exactly in the middle bottom of the back end of the stern in front of the rudder so you can now actually easily drain the hull completely of ALL water just by picking up the bow. (does anybody else have a seaweed farm growing in their hull?)

The boat now comes standard with the turbo pedals

The mechanism for seating the mast has changed completely. No more stupid little metal clip that gets bent each time you go out. There is now a sturdy plastic spring loaded lever on top of the mast step which one must pull out and then push back in and close to firmly seat the mast. No more wire to pull the clip back. The boat is cleaner on the inside now without it. Its great.

Along with this, the bottom of the mast and the internal seating mechanism is completely changed/reversed. The bottom of the mast now has a plastic piece with a hole in it which seats firmly into a raised metal pin in the bottom of the mast well. This means that if the well get some flotsam or jetsam in it, the mast will still go in easily and seat tightly. Before, if junk got in the bottom of the well, the pin on the mast would never seat correctly and the mast would be raised a bit and would not clip correctly onto the metal clip at the top of the fitting. This is a great change.

The daggerboard is now made of a hard ding proof composite material instead of the brittle plastic with a much thicker and stronger and rounder head (compared to my 2007 model) which will allow easier and more accurate adjustment of the daggerboard to ride completely lengthwise directly under the hull. I am not sure, and I no longer have my original daggerboard to compare, but I think it might be just a bit longer than the old one as well... but could be my imagination, too.

The rudder pin, while still composite, is reportedly made of much stronger material with less propensity to break. (I had gone to metal after breaking 3 of them).

I am not sure when they took it out, but there is no longer any screw hole in the rudder to screw it down tight. The tension on the pulley system holding the rudder down seems much tighter on this new boat than on my 2007 which hopefully will keep the rudder from popping up under high wind/wave conditions on a port tack.

The entire pedal mechanism has been upgraded and strengthened with thicker plastic and a stronger steel chain. Of course it has the threaded pedal mast insert which was an earlier upgrade.

The sail is still the same. The hull is the same.

Only complaint:
Unfortunately, there are still no internal barriers to stop gear from slipping all up and down throughout the hull (I have been missing several sandals and a brown sock for over a year!)

Hobie has cetainly listened to every little complaint and problem and done something about it. I am truly impressed with their custmer service.

This is all I can recall as to the changes. There may be others that I forget (or that did not impact me).

It does not come standard with a trolling motor. Seriously though, the tramps are extra.

I will also put in a big plug for Economy Tackle here in Sarasota where I got a great price (as a repeat custiomer) and the customer service was (and always is) syuperb. Thanks Al (and Kelly even though you weren't there). It is much appreciated.

Geoffrey

Sorry, just recalled some more changes in the seat apparatus.

The seat has been changed to have a higher back (my perception, could be wrong), but most importantly, there is a blow-up lumber support which is great. It is actually self inflating when you open the nozzle on the back, but it can be manually blown up further for added support. Open the nozzle, sit back and it will deflate. To do this, though, Hobie has eliminated the mini zippered backpack on the back of the seat (I'll put my sunscreen in the mesh pocket now).

The seat bottom cushion is also made of different flotation material which reportedly will not crush as much (and crunch to the back of the seat leaving a flat cushion in the front).

Also, the plastic pins which hold the seat in the holes in the hull have been changed. They are now expansion pins which are screw tightened. After you plug the seat into the hull, you open a velcro strap at the junction of the seat and back, and twist a round metal pin to expand the platic pins in the hull which makes it impossible for the seat to come out of the holes (as mine often did until I tried a bit of duct tape). Fold the velcro strap over the pins to close the assmebly. (No you can't feel it on your butt).

The clips that hold the seat straps to the metal fittings on the hull are now (strong) plastic rather than the (rusty) metal clips as before.

Good thinking again Hobie.

Shorty, I think mesh reinforcing would be rather difficult to achieve in the roto-moulding process. But in some ways, what you are talking about does happen with some laminate style materials, but these aren't roto-moulded.

A very easy process. Make certain fibers in the fabric magnetic w/standoffs(holds the fabric a specific distance from the surface) and use magnets on the outside of the mold to hold it steady. It would have to be far enough from the mold to allow for initial polymer adhesion to begin on the mold.

Does mine have the same EXPANDable plugs. If they are They willl get tightened tomorrow. If not is the new style backward compatible.

I received my AI in December 2008...
Does the 2009 seat have the 'expandable' seat plugs?
I have looked at my seat (even added the air cushion seat) and
have never noticed any expansion capability!

If this feature is newer than the Fall 2008 (2009 model) can it
be ordered and installed on the 'older' seats?

The slip-n-slide seat that came with my AI is my only real
complaint about the AI!

The expandable seat plugs are brand new. I would think they could be added to any seat.

Matt is this true, and if so, what part number?

Or drive a small length of wooden dowell into the centre of each plug which will expand when wet and grip the hull better than Tarzan could ever do...Pirate

What about those seat buckles have they been sorted? my AI is a 2009 model with the plastic seat buckles, that just will not hold in place! the 2009 seat imo is a load of junk........

Roller, if you just double the strap back through the rear slot of the buckle, it should hold fine. Works for me.
