How do you rig navigation lights on your AI?

I like to sail Sydney Harbour after work on Wednesdays. As the days grow shorter in Aus I will inevitably be out at twilight and after dusk, so need nav lights. To solve the problem, I bought battery operated P/S and steaming lights, but am yet to work out effective ways of mounting them.

On the one occasion when I needed them, I tied the P/S light to my extended Scotty rod holder with a velcro strap and that did the trick. I had previously mounted a torch on this rod holder to light up the sail as per:


My steaming light has a suction cup but, apart from the drink bottle holder behind the seat, there is nowhere on the AI smooth enough to secure it.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have some suction cup jobbies that stick well up forward near the big hatch. You're right in that a lot of the top side is too rough for the suction cups to stick. Yet to use mine in anger but I've seen ChrisJ mount one up front too. They stick pretty well but I'd still use a lanyard just in case.

In saying that I now have a number of RAM Mount balls that could be used if required.

Yeah, I stick mine to the (smooth) foredeck with the suction cup and tether it. As to the stern light, I've been influenced by Kayaking Bob's post, suggesting it's better not to use the standard red/green bow and white stern light setup, as you may be mistaken for a power boat.

May I suggest the Gorilla Torch? I've attached this to the rear aka and pointed it onto the sail. It is extremely bright at short range, and really makes the white of the sail shine!

I also bought a set of waterproof LED holiday lights and attached a 9v battery. The white lights should show up great at night, but I am trying to figure out how to attach the battery to the top of the mast and clip the lights to the edge of the sail. If that doesn't say "sailboat at night," I dunno what will.

I'm looking at something more robust, but still low cost and making use the same battery operated lights (which are inexpensive and readily available from most marine suppliers.)

Closer examiniation of the Kyalight looks very promising. I am ordering one as well as a base only on which to mount the P/S light. I'll post a review when they arrive.

Anyone come across any other options?

I'm going to attach a garden solar light to my mast. Think it would work well, they are light, waterproof, don't require charging and automatically turn on when it gets dark. Seems like a perfect solution to me.
