This is great! Thanks for sharing the idea, the pics, and the specs. Have you determined yet whether would sell (not sail) a kit?

I presently have no intention of turning it into a kit for sale.

There are places that will contract print 3D parts and I am happy to provide instructions.

Personally I wouldn't be prepared to back the parts for sale without more use even though I did use them in +20 knot winds yesterday and they held up fine. But then I also saw where I might want to modify 1 part of the design slightly.

Hello,

I would like to get these parts fabricated at a 3D printing service. is there one you recommend? Also, what material is best for these parts?

Thanks for your help.

A fan.

I would hold off if you can.

I really need to allow for the boom to lift. Without a suitable vang the boom movement causes the whole mount to move on the mast. I can change the design to allow the movement but might be some days before I get around to it.

I'm new to 3D but my understanding is the best materials in order would be Nylon, ABS, PETG, then PLA+. I use PLA+ (not the same as PLA). It's easy to use and so far there are no signs of failure. Of note though is I do know that PLA+ will deform over time with pressure. I don't think it will apply in this circumstance but it's just one thing I have discovered in my limited 3D printing experience.

I've never used a 3D printing service. I just know they exist. You could probably just throw an add on facebook or something and some local kid would do it for you.

I printed with 0.4mm extruder with 0.2mm layers. 3 perimeters and 30% crosshatch infill.

Hello,

Thanks. Please let me know when your new design is completed.

I am exploring 3D printing and hope to construct my own Hobie kayak sail boom. I got the first gooseneck design fabricated and it came out very well from a company called Xometry that provided good service, a nice item, and at a good price.

Please post or send an updated photo as your design has gone through some nice evolution. Great stuff!

Thanks!

Updated gooseneck.

I should add I hadn't worked out exactly how much angle I needed to allow the boom freedom to lift so this may have more clearance than required. Will take a few more sunny weekends to find out.
Also I have ideas for a vang. Will need to do some stress testing first though.

Thought I would throw this in, helps me go to weather better:

I modified a Hobie 16 rudder to snap into the Mirage well.

Making a boom real soon!

Thanks for the ideas!
