Wow! A lot of interesting reading there! I’d read a couple of these before, and I think you probably had some influence on my decision to buy a Sport. Mine is yellow, too, though by comparison with yours (ahem, your wife’s), mine seems pretty bare. Not a mod anywhere to be seen! Not yet, anyway.

I very much enjoyed reading and seeing how you constructed your outriggers, Apalach. If they could not be purchased, and with sufficient motivation, I might be able to replicate them. But… they CAN be purchased—the Hobie Sidekick Amas, that is—and there is a used set now sitting at my dealer’s with, perhaps, my name on it. Anyway, the price is better than the total cost of labor, materials, and mistakes my own version would require.

The catalog says these sidekicks can be installed on any Hobie kayak. Maybe I should believe them and let my dealer explain how and where instead of excitedly jumping into other people’s discussions here. Thanks for your reply, though.

Yea Becky,
But you have to be careful following the Hobie installation suggestions about using well nuts. They may hold up for a while, but with enough stress on them, they may/will pull out. The best way to go about it (and it's not always easy to get at) is to use thru-bolted machine screws, washers, and nuts. I've never had a problem with thru-bolting if I had room to do that, but well nuts are known to be unreliable over time. Kind of surprised me that Hobie went with those, but of course that was the "easiest" solution to the problem.

Just for grins, here is a list of links for 10 mods to the Hobie Sport (including the outriggers), in case you are feeling extra ambitious! :D

Hi Becky and Apalach,

Yes Wellnuts pose some issues as well documented in many posts including several of my own since I put my sidekicks in a location you cannot get to to thru-bolt install on my revolution.

I replaced the standard wellnuts that came with the sidekick to 1" long wellnuts and they have been holding flawlessly now. More mushroom grip due to the 1" length.

Anyone having problems with the wellnuts for the sidekicks move up to the 1" ones or better yet use them from the start if you cannot thru-bolt.
Best advice though is place them where they can be bolted.

Revo

A Thrill Ride is being dragged around in your kayak for 40 minutes by an extremely large fish.

Apalach, thanks for the treasure trove! I had already read a few of these and saved links my "Favorites", which shows what a fan of yours I've become.

And Revo, I thank you, too, for yet another timely tip. Really appreciate you guys sharing your hard-earned wisdom with this very green Hobie-come-lately (though I can clearly see you can't help it.)
