You have to tension the top two/three battens to cater for strong winds, fx-one etc use softer battens to allow top of main to blow off quicker. Most guys with pentex/square tops tend to oversheet in low winds - block to block don't work well. Found with high wind the pentex comes into its own, have to loosen battens for higher winds. I find I tack easier with std main. Square top looks F1 while std looks like go karts.
At the end of the day I still prefer my std main, when I set it, stretched, old etc it still looks damn good. I prefer sailing with tight battens in most wind conditions which helps a hell of a lot. I stay with the square tops, unless sail area is much bigger. (Can add a H18 jib to a square top). Found that the tiger mast base helps dramatically with tacking with tight battens, for me that helps more than which sail I am using. Solo sailing I am overpowered with a pentex/square top, so end up quicker with a std main.
Pentex square top out here is cheaper than std main.
