Hi all,

Thought I'd share this video of me and friend on a recent race around California's Anacapa Island. It is an annual open class handicapped race called the "Tri-Point Race" sponsored by the Pierpoint Bay Yacht Club in Ventura, CA and is open to beachcats. They also provide a chase boat for the cats in case things get rough. A total of 11 beachcats participated this year, one of which (mine) was a Hobie. Would love to see more Hobies out there next year!

Cheers!

We were 1st to finish in our class but ended up with 4th place on handicap.

Great video and what a beautiful day to be out sailing! I was just hoping to see you pull that spinnaker out :(

Was only able to use it during the last 1/2 hour of the race when on a broad reach. Entire race was close and beam reaches.

There is a group of us that would love to make this event but it is the same weekend every year as the Wine and Roses Regatta in Santa Barbara. It's has just been more important for us to support this club and fund raiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We have about 10-12 Local (central coast) active H18s that would be interested if we could find another similar event or different date.
:(

Understood. How about the "Frenchy's Rum Runner Race" sponsored by the Ventura Sailing Club which is held in late June every year? This is a race from Ventura out to Frenchy's Cove on Anacapa Island and back. Are the boats in your fleet all class legal Hobies? I'm out of Bakersfield and love to race but obviously my boat isn't class legal. Is the Wine & Roses race open to class legal boats only?

"Class legal" is loosely defined in the 18 class in Division 3, but your sail won't cut it. I showed up to a race with a square head, pentex Whirlwind sail and smoked the fleet, and afterwards was advised to get a class legal sail. We don't protest wings, though.

A simple solution to this is to have a different handicap for square top sails and allow all to sail.

This might work for us. Is there and NOR on this?

Yes it is. As well as 20 other regattas in the state. You should consider getting a factory set of sails to join us. It looks to me that your boat would be fine otherwise. I could even spot you a set of sails for a race or two. We are heading to Bodega Bay Sept 12th and Mexico in Oct. Join us! :D

We also sail in the SF Bay quite a bit in "Open" classes like the Great Pumpkin Regatta or the Delta Ditch Run. You can sail those with a BAMA rating.

Come to Mexico. We are taking 7 Hobie 18s from the Central Coast and there will be as many as 12-15 total down there. I leave Oct 5th and come back Oct 12th....

This event is right up my alley but unfortunately I won't be able to make it this weekend. Is this an annual event?

It was, and hopefully it will be again. We just need to make sure we play nice this weekend. I think we have 3 18s pre-registered so far.
