 Post subject: Mast fell down

Mast fell down yesterday while sailing, not fully powered up.
Reason: corroded shroud Anchor Pin.
Evidence... Rust stains and tiny cracks can be seen on the one that hadn't failed.
My advice would be to regularly visually inspect and replace if necessary.
By the way this was an old Hobie 16 and is a rental boat.

Those pins are cheep enough that replacing them should not be a problem. Another factor that most don't think about is that Stainless Steel does not have the best fatigue properties. What this means it that after repeated load/unload cycles stainless fatigues and breaks. Sounds like those pins had exceeded their fatigue life. Somebody has not lost a pin in a very long time.
