RobDek, every beach or 'small' catamaran I know of that runs a spinnaker, uses the mainsheet as a backstay. That's why we always set the traveler, then tighten up on the mainsheet before we raise the spin. This is critical, especially with a comp tip mast.
Due to the geometry of such boats, you cannot run a backstay, as it will jam up the mainsail.
