Used Hobie Getaway Questions

Hello all,

Little background. I'm new to sailing prior experience was a Hobie Wave and want something bigger for the family of 4 with 2 lil boys to use. Came across the Getaway and really like the boat. Not interested in a racer type. Anyway, I found a 2013 Hobie Getaway for what I thought was a good price ($3900, no trailer or extras) and based on the photos seemed in good condition. Boat is a rental boat in Miami and company is looking to replace it. After a personal inspection, I'd say its in fair/good condition with the exception of the starboard keel which is worn out. The keel is worn out through the plastic and foam is showing from being repeatedly dragged on/off the beach. Can this be repaired or is it a total hull loss and in need of replacement? Also, what is the working life of a mast? Is the mast/comptip joint prone to failure? They had a fiberglass patch over it they said they add to all the boat to re-enforce that joint. Any other areas of concern for this type of boat?

Sounds like too much for an old rental boat.

The keel is not repairable.

Thanks Matt. I'm thinking more and more about just going with a new rig. Do you know if the older color scheme for sails is still available (blue/green/yellow)? I'm not a huge fan of the orange/yellow.

Agree with Matt, half that is probably too much to ask.

Masts are pretty robust and if they were not fitted with a composite tip, they'd last pretty much forever (aluminum tube). The comp tip is the weak spot and hobie ought not have done that, but they did.

That hull is shot, boat can't sail very well without the skeg. Plastic can't be repaired or modified.

Better pass on this boat.
