sail/furling kit for PA14

I recently purchased a '16 PA14. Took her on her maiden voyage last weekend, and LOVE it! I have a few questions about sailing upgrades though...

I'm thinking about purchasing the sail & furling kit for it. Still not sure if it's worth the ~$450 for both though...does't seem like the sail provides much speed on it's own, just a way to scoot along without peddling/paddling. Have read quite a few reviews that the flexible mast spills a lot of air, causing it to not be as efficient as it could be. Maybe this is a good thing, being in a yak?

Does the furling kit hobie puts out allow for easy removal/install of the sail kit while on the water?

Does anyone have any experience making their own mast/sail? Been looking at sailrite, and looks like I could get sail materials for around $100. No experience with sewing though, so I might just be better off buying the hobie sail kit. Would also need to make a mast for it.

Anyone ever modded their cassette plug, outfitting it with some type of center board to add more stability to their yak? Hear a lot of folks using the mirage drive as such, but was thinking cassette plug outfitted with some sort of centerboard (longer/heavier than mirage drive) would be more efficient.
