Gday,
Thought I would share some pics of my sail rig. I didnt like the Hobie sail as I reckon its too big. The Spirit Sail breaks down into a small bag that can be stowed inside the hull. The sail masts are 3-piece with a bungee cord through the centre.
I have attained speeds of about 5 knots in the River here (Brisbane, Australia) which is good enough to mix it up with the local Sailing Club.
If a sudden gust of wind comes up you can ease off the lanyards, the masts will flex and the wind will spill out of the sail. But if you want to harness the power of that gust, then keep the lanyards tight and pull the masts towards you and you will take off.
Also, as you will see by the pics, the entire mount can turn 360°, so you can easily sail into the wind by pulling one way or another on the lanyards.
The stainless tube (22mm) and deck parts are available at boat suppliers.
You can also erect it at sea.
Waddayareckon?
Cheers,
Jake
