Stepping mast solo

I have the run of the mill trailer with a forward post with a winch mounted on the front of it. I read the old instruction sheets saying to tie off a 3 foot length of line from either each trap line or one 3 foot section between the two of them wrapped around the dolphin striker. The details may be off but I know where to go to verify them. Is that a reliable way to step the mast solo? By that I mean winching the forestay up over the roller on top of the mast support post on the trailer and using the trap lines to prevent it from going too far to either side? In case I can only bring along inexperienced people from time to time. I’m not as worried about handling the boat with inexperienced crew as I am stepping the mast with rookies. As you know, that’s not a light mast.

Your best bet would be to connect your winch line directly to your forestay, trap wire, or main halyard. Then you just tell the helper to crank the winch while you guide the mast up from the tramp. Pretty fool proof and no risk of the mast swinging sideways out of control. Once the mast is up, pin the bridles to the bow tangs.

Is this the system you have? Or something similar where the mast support is acting as the gin pole? The trap wires stabilize the mast.

This is the system I use now, attaching the gin pole to the mast. I made one similar, years ago, with a 2x4 for a gin pole, for a Hobie 17. It worked just as well as this fancy one I have now! On my homemade one, I used the trap wires for stabilizing the mast. The factory system uses cords that attach to the main halyard and attach to a slug that goes in the sail track. My old system was faster!
