You need to inspect your luff track. maybe even spend $2 and buy a sail slug (1/2" if I remember correctly from a marina) and slide it down the track to see if you're getting hung up. You need the sail all the way to the top of the mast, otherwise you'll be inviting trouble. Like having the sail pull out of the luff track at the top of the mast and not be able to raise or lower it. I only say this because of the unintentional dropping of the mast may have put the squeeze on the track.
Did you pull the snot out of the halyard when raising the main and left it under tension prior to down hauling?
You might also try spraying the inside of the luff track with some DRY teflon,,,Dupont makes some, available a Lowes or Home Despot.
