Just wondering what peoples experience is with their HIN number, first off I have read that they are hand etched into the hull from the factory which was a surprise to me. I recently purchased a used 1993 Hobie 21 Sport Cruiser and was reading that the HINs are generally 12 characters long, however mine is only 8 long. Is this normal?

I can only speak for my 18 and 21se, but both have 12 digit hand-scribed hull id numbers on both hulls.

During times of model year change-over or slow inventory turn-over the factory would delay adding the last few digits. Sometimes they were added at the time of shipping and were possibly missed.

I assume you have something like CCMC2222? (CCMC = Coast Catamaran Manufacture and then a 4 digit serial number?)

The next would be a letter related to the month of manufacture and then the 3 digits representing year of manufacture and model year.

Yes, currently all that is shown is CCMM0855. I bought the boat in Ontario Canada and am having trouble registering it here in Alabama, not only the 8 digit HIN but they are also telling me "they arnt importing boats from Canada at this time". Turning into a nightmare. I wonder if it might be worth contacting Hobie.

The serial numbers recorded in the current system do not go that far back. This is a mid 1980's vintage product. Usually the registrations offices allow an inspection and replacement number for registering boats and trailers with issues like this. Contact the Hobie dealer in Toronto for any possible guidance.
