New to here, and awaiting delivery of my TI in dune... definitely interested in building a couple of hakas, and am leaning towards aluminum.
Aluminum can add up in weight pretty quick; I think to build to a common pattern like some of the wood ones (3x 1x4" x 72"x0.125") would weigh more than 25lbs each.
@garyinwi made some interesting aluminum ones, but I don't see any details on the material and sizes used. I don't think I can PM, as I am too new here.
Gary - are you still checking in? If so, can you share more details?
Or perhaps others have seen more info on these? (sorry I have looked at other haka related threads but not found it yet)
I do have some ideas, but if Gary's turned out strong enough, they may work ideal.
Thanks in advance!
Brad
Not Gary, but I made aluminum ones (above) 0.090" thickness worked great with a welded stiffener, 125" didn't need the stiffener.
Thanks Tom,
I've followed your haka build on this thread and another that you started. They look really interesting and I think they may be one of the lightest options out there.
I was hoping to build some out of aluminum rectangular tubing and bolting things together, as I don't have any tools or aluminum welding skills.
At this point, I'm looking at perhaps making a narrower set out of 3x 1x2x0.125 tubing, bolting them together with some cross braces. I think a gab of 1.25 to 1.5" would work, making the total width about 8-9" and keeping the weight to about 16-17lbs.
Tom (and others), any thoughts on the above? Will I be disappointed in the reduced width? Will a 1.5" space be ok for sitting on? (I may add some seatek)
Thanks all for any feedback; this is a fantastic forum and a great thread!
