After you take the T Handle off tie a light cord To this before letting it go back into the
Hull.
Then you can pull it back through after you have got rid of or modified the bungy section.
There is a plastic piece that is pressed into the hull that this line goes through it you pull this out
First it creates a larger hole in the hull to pull the line through.
You only need enough slack in the system to access the rear of the bungy
From the rear hatch,

I don't know how much you would need to release.
In mine the line had broken so I pulled it all out to see what happened but you really only need to get enough
Slack to get at the rear section ,
Hope this helps , but as I previously said there's probably an easier way to to this that someone else
Can suggest.
(I have only had my ai a short time so I don't know )

Regarding your concerns about what to do at sea.
If the bungy breaks it doesn't matter , the rudder will be working 100%. Better.
Just the T Handle won't retract.
However the bungy connection to the rudder line with the clip will damage this line.
Because it's taking the load instead on the rudder line.
My rudder line would have broken within a few more trips (if the bungy didn't break)
carry a length of rope with you .
If the rudder line does break lift the rear hatch and tie it to spectra line commiing
From the rudder.
Then pull the rudder down leaving the hatch loose.
I haven't had to to this but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Leaving the hatch loose at sea seems a sure way to flood your hull.

There are other options, but if your "rope" were thin enough (e.g., spectra line), you could simply pull the rudder down and tie off the spectra line to an open cleat for that purpose and close the hatch. Leakage through the hatch seal would be minor. Alternatively, in your driveway, attach your backup line to the "down rudder" line inside near the rear hatch. Then, run that backup line inside the hull to near the middle hatch and fix it loosely on an open cleat inside the hull. If your down line, would break, you have a backup "rudder down" line immediately available from your seat.

Yes that's what I meant , tie it off and close the hatch as much as possible.
But the extra line set up is a good idea
