I have only had the Tandem for a couple of days...weather has been cold and wet. Did take it out yesterday, between rain storms. The wind was barely a breeze (<5 knots) The Tandem certainly is a larger and heavier kayak than the AI! The larger rudder noticeably swings the stern effectively at lower speeds. I didn't notice any difference in control between a port and starboard tack...but then I wasn't moving very fast either. I am anxious to see how she handles in higher winds and real waves.
The Tandem's extra rudder pin is too long to store under the hatch. I adapted a gear bucket to securely store the pin. The Tandem's rudder attachment is so much more robust than the AI's, in both length and bracket. I feel less worried about breaking a pin. The rudder lines are lead differently on the Tandem and they don't look like they will get in the way of an easy change of a pin.
Again, sorry that this reply got inserted as a new topic... it seems that when I 'submit' a reply...sometimes it is sent back as a new subject. (I know I had clicked on <reply> not <submit>)...not sure why this has happened twice. I really don't want to clutter up the forum listings.
