Maybe we run two competitions.
1. Max speed maintained over 50 meters
2. Min time achieved paddling/peddling over 1 mile/kilometer/nautical mile..whatever.

That will be fine but I...

1. Suggest we go for 30 seconds and measure achived distance instead. That maybe will be a more accurate reading.

2. Suggest we go a 1km (will be a little shorter than 1 mile).

If anyone is interested in a longer race, just tell me what distance you prefer.

6,2 knots is respect!
But I will try. In your first post you said it was a 30 seconds run. Thus I think we can use that.
If we go for very short runs and let the power of our legs explode in Mirage drive, there is a risk we just crash our equipment.

Is this OK?

Hi Thomas, yes the 6.2 knots was a real effort to hold for even 30 seconds and I felt like the kayak was really flying along. Your comment about pushing our gear over its limits is a good one and I was wondering if anyone has broken a mirage drive or cracked a hull from a burst of energy?...Pirate

PS I just finished another little video of a recent trip three of us did at Lake Tyres and up an arm to a place known as burnt bridge. It is quite a wilderness area and we enjoyed sailing/peddling through it. I will post it on Youtube if people are interested...Pirate

Alright you wimps, time to put up or shut up. Here are some times to get things started. Since the distance was still up in the air, here are a few, starting with 1K for those who have no lasting power, up to 1 hour for a respectable short cruise. I know this is just a warm up for Kal.

Distance........Time(min/sec)....Speed

1k (.625 mi).........6:21.......5.95 mph (9.47kph)
1mi (1.6k)..........10:21.......5.81 mph (9.3kph)
2.5 mi (4k).........26:15.......5.71 mph (9.14kph)
5 mi (8k)...........52:15.......5.74 mph (9.18kph)
5.76 mi (9.22k)....1.0 hr......5.76 mph (9.22kph)

Oh yes, I forgot to mention there was a light head wind this morning (5-8 kts) w/ light chop for the first 2.5 miles -- should make these times easy enough to beat.
Image

Upon reversing direction, conditions improved to variable light tail winds (5 kt average), so I could make up for some time lost (averaged 5.8 mph the last 3.26 mi/5.22k)

Oh yes, my verifier is Abraham Alibi, also known as "honest Abe". He's just waiting for my check to clear.

Straight out of your pocket would make that a 'wet cheque' would it not Roadrunner?...Pirate

Well this didn´t add up for me. When I use 1851,851852m for one nautical mile and 1609,344 for the mile I belive you use, I get these values:
1 k…......in...6:21…..=...will result in...5.87 mph (9.45kph)
1 mi…....in…10:21...=...will result in...5.80 mph (9.33kph)
2,5 mi.....in…26:15...=...will result in...5.71 mph (9.20kph)
5 mi.…...in…52:15....=...will result in...5.74 mph (9.24kph)
5,76 mi...in…1:0 hr...=...will result in...5.76 mph (9.27kph)

Maybe I have done something wrong.
But differences are small and your results, Roadrunner, are excellent! Btw have you noticed that you get faster the longer you run? For the 2,5 mile , 5 mile and 1 hour runs. I think you are quite good at warming up!

Today the ice has melted away and I made the first run in my Adventure since oktober.
Oh! This was heavy! I am not at all fit for racing.
But I tried the 30 second boost run.
I made 2 runs, one with the wind from behind and one the opposite direction.
My average speed became 5,8 knots (10,8 kph).
Not at all competitiv. Long way to Pirates 6,2 knots.
But.
I´ll be back!

best regards from Sweden
thomas

Thomas, thanks for the correction -- no doubt, your figures are more accurate.
I've noticed also it takes awhile to get up to speed once the season starts -- unfortunately a little longer each year! :?

Well I made a second try today and reached 6,135 knots.
GPS said 32seconds and 101 meters.
My problem is that after 20 seconds my power is out and I can´t keep up the speed anymore.

You are still the Speed King of the 30 seconds run!

But I know how many meters I can do in 20 seconds and when I can hold that speed for 30 seconds you are in trouble... :D :D :D

Hi Thomas, Great effort mate. My 30 second time was just a approximation and it may have been 20 seconds not 30 as I stated. I know I was spent after that run and had fully exerted myself. Were you peddling/paddling or just peddling?
Unfortunately my wife's car has been out of action at the mechanics for the last week and I have been relegated to the push bike and motor bike until she gets hers back so no Hobie action for me for a week or so. I even had to miss out on an overnight adventure with Mickey and others in their AIs tomorrow night which I am struggling to come to terms with.
I am however beefing up on carbs and with lots of extra bike riding to be able to get the most out of my legs for my trial runs, so I am feeling quietly confident over here my friend....Pirate :?

OOOOppppsssssss...my mistake...pedalling is what I meant to write. I must have got it confused with the word piddling which I seem to want to do more or more often these days...Pirate

Figured so. Peddling in an AI or TI would not be ideal, can't keep a large inventory and might not be the fastest get away vehicle

I was just pedalling (I hope I got the spelling right), need both hands to hold myself steady in the kayak at these high speeds.

The race is still on! Anyone else interested to join?
