I guess I would counter that with:
1 - the 3" and 4" PVC bunks are effectively as stiff as a board in this application and don't seem to damage
2 - Hobie seems fine with one storing the boat on just the cradles which is effectively a very small area. I would think longitudinal bunks would distribute load better then them.
The only reason I am thinking there aren't more is cost. Since the PVC is cheap and wood+carpet+maybe padding is more.
