mast rivets

Both of my mast rivets (are there more?) look like this.


How big a concern is this?

If you aren't sailing on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

If any rivets look like that, I would replace them. That one pictured is probably not doing much. Probably got that way from repeated mast stepping stresses.
Good project for the upcoming spring!

2007 Hobie Wave

You should definitely replace that. It is extremely easy to do. All you have to do is drill out the existing rivet and replace it with the new one. A rivet gun and rivets cost me $20. It is a cheap and accessible repair and necessary at the base of the mast.

Just make sure you use the recomended rivets. Check out the parts diagrams in the Hobie catalog (8010131 monel). Don't use standard aluminum rivets, they may not be strong enough, stainless steel rivets could couse galvanic corrosion. Yes, very easy to do, the hardest part (for me) is to squeeze that rivet tool closed!

Yeah, squeezing that tool is a hoot! I did my jib cleat rivets this past summer and when the rivet set and the gun snapped free it jerked up and hit me in the face. I quickly looked around and saw none of the neighbors had seen this so I picked up my bent glasses and retreated to the garage for frosty refreshment.
