upright storage

Hey I have a question for those of you who keep your hobies set up during the summer. I'm thinking about joining the local yacht club so I can leave the boat set up in the summer, to save time and wear and tear from set up/ take down.

Since the Comptip is fiberglass, do you do anything to cover it from the sunlight when your not sailing? I was thinking about just covering it with Duck tape to keep it from the sun.

I suppose I could make a snorkal like the jib and use the main halyard to pull it up. Any ideas or suggestions would be great!

Before you do, try this. Take a piece of tape and leave it outside for a couple of weeks in direct sunlight. Then remove it for your answer.

Just paint it annually, and hit the rest of the mast w/ Penetrol while your at it.

I sail a getaway and the comp tip is in eternal shade from this dirigible attached at the top!
I like the idea of paint, I am a barber and would love a barber pole at the top of my mast.
Everyone at my club leaves their masts up during the summer and there are 20-30 with masts that have been up for years and years. I have never heard the topic brought up but I will ask around.

My comp tip has been in the sun for 20 years looks pretty much as new I do wax the tip every year

What kind of wax do you use? Car wax such as Turtle wax paste?

I have used almost all the Marine Wax over the years
This spring I will try a product called POLY GLOW
I saw it on Ship Shape TV an I will use it on my Hobie 21SE and my 14 turbo On one hull i will use old wax systen and compare Check out the internet for that product it looks pretty good I will also try it on my Hydra Sport 24 CC

Poly Glow and Vert Glass (lovettmarine.com) are wonderful products. I like the applicators from the Vert Glass kit best. These products are truly amazing and I have used them for years on fiberglass hulls. There are several cardinal rules to success; first you must get all oxidation and "marks" off the fiberglass. Anything on the hull will be trapped by the coating and become very obvious. The first time they are used it takes 4-5 coats before the fiberglass shines so at first it is easy to think things are not going well and get worried. After the first year you only put two coats on to avoid build up. Poorly prepared surfaces and too many coats leads to peeling. Used properly you will be amazed and thrilled with either product. Waxing with abrasive compounds is a bad idea over time, the beauty of the Poly Glow path is you use abrasives once to get all oxidation off the fiberglass then you never use abrasives again.

I agree with waxing the comp tip to prevent oxidation but it has been my experience that waxing the top of a boat risking having your feet come out from under you and ending up in the drink. Is there such a thing as a not-skid wax for the top sections of fiberglass boats?
