OOOhhhhhhh, its you Mork. I was wondering who was giving me some (censored). I gotta be in Kansas City on business wednesday through Sat of the Des Moines regatta and plan on being back to DM on Sat night. If you can't make the race, I can bring the 17 to KC for you and save you a few hundred hours. I owe you anyway for kicking us at golf. People LOVE the tornado story.........
If you're going to sail at the regatta, I'll bring your beer and golf balls with me and see you on the sunday of the regatta.

Whatever Pat, I got my ass in Spin Class just so I can drop a few hundred pounds to keep up with you. Plus I am bringing a different boat that doesn't weigh as much as a 21 sc.
We'll see you in a month, hope you got the Heineken truck lined up again.....

Remember, This is a division 16 run event, not just 204.
Heineken is a sponsor. Should be beer.
I also need to hit that spin class.
220 doesn't go downwind real fast on a 14.
I bet Sarah's 90lbs would be pretty quick though.
See you soon.

Here's a link to a blog of a newbie's cat sailing/racing experience: http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-tao1ZVsy ... -?cq=1&p=9

She wrote what I figured was going through the minds of people who don't get on the boat with me again. I try to tone my sailing down with beginners, but it's not easy. And I believe the "Jeremy" mentioned is Jeremy of Surf City Catamarans, who is a mighty big fellow, so his Herculean effort mentioned is likely not exaggerated.

That was a great read. Funny stuff!

Heh yea. I can certainly say from first hand experience (my wife doesn't sail with me anymore) that some people have very hard and fast limits. What gets me is the people that would be terrified going 15 on a sailboat but have no problem going 35 behind a skiboat...

Incidently and now completely off-topic, my family used to camp at Woodward reservoir mentioned in that story, and here I had my first sailing experiences - an Optimist and a ~25' monohull, both as a passenger, but it nonetheless planted the bug. Almost 20 years later, I finally got a sailboat of my own!

As another young attorney with young kids, let me recommend the Getaway. It is great for the family, easy to take out another couple, and most importantly, requires very little time to set up and take down.

I bought mine a month ago and because it is so easy to sail and requires so little time to prepare, I have been able to use it a lot with the family, even while billing heavy hours ;).

Hope to leave early to head out this afternoon.

D'oh!

Well, we had a nice day at the Fleet 25 Regatta last weekend so I decided to bid on an 18 that Steve Coolie picked out for me. I bid that sucker up some $1300 in the last ten minutes before I walked away. Ouch.

So I'm still in the market for a Hobie 18 somewhere in middle America. I'll keep you informed, so you will know when to expect the "ok, now how do I..." questions.

Jesse,

Nice to meet you and your family at the Cat Fight :)

Nicer to know you're not the one who bid $4,712.12 for a 1987 Hobie 18

Check www.craigslist.org for boats. I just checked and the nearest 18 for sale to you is in Dallas.

Yeah John, it got a bit steep. It did have everything I would want and all the extra's, so it would have probably been cheaper in the long run than buying a boat that needed new sails, new tramp, hull repair, harnesses, trailer work, etc. etc. Not to mention the time commitment for such things. Another reason I was willing to pay more was to get a boat sooner rather than later.

Nonetheless, it got higher than I was willing to pay so back to shopping!

The boat in Dallas is scant on details, I will call and inquire. Thanks for the tip.

I want:
Hobie 18/SE (As I understand it, there is scant races available for SX)
1986 or newer.
Decent sails and tramp (at least a couple seasons in them)
wings greatly preferred
White hulls prefered

and otherwise in a condition ready to sail. I do not want my families introduction to sailing to be me cussing at all the work I have to do. That comes later.
 (burned myself pretty good this weekend working on my fishing boat, damnit)

Just my .02 on the coast of sailing. It's not cheap BUT I just sold a 1979 Glastron/Carlson Jet Boat for basically what I had in the NEW exhaust system! I worked and rebuilt that boat for years, had a friend redo the engine, got 20 hours out of it before catastrophic engine failure! I was so discusted I put her away for 2 years, and then sold it to a friends son for $1500. I'm figuring about a $7,000 loss. But hey, he's a good guy and at least I can go for rides on it!
The ONLY boat I ever made money on was a CATAMARAN! I had a Sol Cat right before I bought my first house. I sailed it for 2 years. When I was getting ready to buy my 1st house I got terrified of what the mortgage was going to do to me so I sold EVERYTHING I could to scrape up as much cash as possible, including the cat which I got $300 more than I paid for it! That was in 1988. I just bought a 1981 H16 last week and am going crazy with anticipation about getting back to sailing. (See "awakening from 20 year slumber"...or something like that in H16 forum).
