I have done the Catalina crossing more times than I can remember. It is an awesome experience. I have also done the Great Texas 5 times. I would not even consider it to be a "warm up" to anything. It is a full throttle ride. If you're going to cross the Gulf Stream (which I plan to do as well) do your home work! Learn the weather patterns! The current! The fact that youre going to have to go through customs! You'll most likely be beating to weather going from where you are planning. I know a few guys that do it on occasion. It is totally doable. I am an adventurer and have that crossing near the top of my list...next to a full run to the Virgin Islands. Were planning that one as the Master Card Challenge.
