Hello everyone. Has anyone else noticed (those that own a 2.5 hp outboard) that the outboard motor is useless after sailing around for an hr or more? We use it to get out of the channel, it works great at the beginning. However, every time we try to use it to get in, it won’t stay running! It will start, but stalls out right away. It’s not like we are capsizing the boat, just normal cruising. Anyone else have this problem? (I have the Yamaha 2.5hp).

I have a Honda 2.3hp on my Getaway. Never had this issue. When sailing, I always shut off the fuel valve and vent cap, then raise the motor and the motor mount.
If range is not a concern, a Torqeedo is perfect for getting in/out of the channel.

2.5 hp Suzuki. No issues. Water splashing up on it?

Yep, I shut the fuel valve off and vent cap to off when sailing around. I lift the motor up, so it is up out of the water, but water does splash on it when sailing - so maybe that’s the issue? Also, by having it tipped up, I am wondering if oil is getting into the cylinder?

You've probably figured this out by now, but most small 4 stroke outboards are now designed to be wet sump motors (that is, no oil pump). Consequently, it matters which side is facing up when the motor is horizontal (owners manual will tell you). IF you have the oil filled to the top mark (full), then when you angle the motor for sailing, some oil will get into the carb and clog the main jet. You can then start the motor but it will stall right away unless you operate at full throttle with choke (that is, you are keeping it running with other jets than the main jet). It is an easy fix, drain some engine oil until there is just barely enough (bottom mark, bottom of bullseye...).
